Three sentenced to death over former Embakasi legislator killing
Three suspects in the murder trial of slain Embakasi MP Mugabe Were have been sentenced to death. Trial judge Luka Kimaru yesterday sent James Omondi alias Castro and two others to the gallows after they were found guilty of killing the former MP on January 29, 2008 at the height of the post-election violence.
While delivering the ruling which has dragged in court for seven years, Justice Kimaru said the prosecution had proved its case beyond any reasonable doubts that Castro, Wycliffe Simiyu alias Zimbo, and Paul Omondi alias Papa shot and killed the late MP.
He commended the police for conducting investigations surrounding the murder case with professionalism and diligence, saying it assisted the court to arrive at a just decision. “The court applauds the senior officers who investigated the murder as they did it with professionalism and diligence.
It is my hope they apply the same in other criminal cases ,” he said. The judge, however, acquitted fourth accused, Mary Muthoni, saying evidence adduced before him did not link her to the murder at the MPs home in Woodley estate.
The widow, Agnes Wairimu welcomed the judgment, saying the court has vindicated her since “some people” who she did not name had silently accused her of murdering her husband.
