DJ Dream’s trendy collection

Kamau Derrick also known as DJ Dream designs clothes for the cool at heart. With a penchant of  sweatshirts, hoodies and varsity jackets, he has been able to create his own collection dubbed Dream Team that has become mainstream for those looking to portray a casual yet edgy look. He speaks to Faith Chebet
My line is detailed, distinct and diverse. I call it the Three Ds. The diversity of the brand makes it unique. This is because with Dream Team, we have something for everyone, regardless of gender, size or age. This is seen in our unisex tees, sweatshirts, hoodies and varsity jackets.
The Dream Team originally started as a way for me to identify with my people, The people who supported me through this whole journey of being a DJ. I’d go for gigs and my peeps would turn up irrespective of where the event was. That’s how it all started; a few pieces of sweatshirts and now, it’s grown to a company, that does design and events for both clubs and private parties.

Dream Team is an extension of me as a deejay. As I grew in the profession, I realised that having my brand was a way of staying connected with my fans.
Style is what you make it. Take the must-haves I need in my closet: A tailored suit, a nice timepiece, nice leather shoes, a heavy leather wallet and sunglasses. We go wrong when we go for things that don’t suit us.
Take chicks for instance. So many don’t dress their size or even age. They’re all about trends, even when that trend wouldn’t suit them. It’s the same with some guys. Skinny jeans, deep cut V-neck tees, body gripping tights; what the heck man? Some people could use a complete makeover.
Take a page from The Kansoul, P-Unit, Xtatic, Rabbit, Jamal Gaddafi and Nick Mutuma; they always look fresh. Style to me is about incorporating both my fashion and music with zero hustle.
I would advise upcoming designers to have a broader way of looking at things, especially if they take this biz seriously. Most designers start with very creative designs then they get stuck in a rut. They become comfortable, not just with designing but marketing as well. Why limit yourself, when the world is your’s for the taking? Our latest looks are customised varsity jackets, and there is much more coming your way.
