Dar es Salaam. The Minister of
State in the President’s Office, Social Relations and Coordination, Dr
Mary Nagu, has directed the Planning Commission to carry out an in-depth
research and come up with an appropriate plan that will enable
Tanzanians to participate and benefit from the gas economy.
“If the country has good plans in place and is
determined to implement them, then its people will be certain of what
they are doing and what they expect to do in future,” said Dr Nagu when
she visited the commission in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Dr Nagu underscored the need for the country to
have new approaches and modern working tools to ensure efficiency and
productivity, however, she added that “all these still require proper
planning.”
“It is vital, therefore, to have studies conducted
and good plans in place...And the planning commission has a key role to
play in this,” she added.
However, the minister said massive investment in
capital and technology is required for Tanzanians to participate and
benefit the gas economy.
She was optimistic that with good plans in place
to guide them, Tanzanians have the capacity to raise resources and
participate in the gas economy through different opportunities,
including manufacturing and other related sectors.
For his part, the Planning Commission executive
secretary, Dr Phillip Mpango, said despite its importance to the
country’s development, the commission faces a myriad of challenges,
among them shortage of personnel, including policy analysts.
Dr Mpango noted that despite limited financial
resources for its operations, the commission focuses on employing more
skilled personnel to ease the shortage.
