National women under 20 team’s technical bench is having a hard time coming up with the final 12-member squad to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo, Egypt, due to players’ fine form in the camp.
Coach Sylvester Kioko dropped five players, Christine Siwa, Brenda Marani, Milka Kimwele, Irene Mbula and Linnette Muremi from the 18 list but could not make up his mind on who to drop between the two libero, Celestine Siwa and Sarah Were who will know their fate next week.
“We still need both of them in cases where we play amongst ourselves but coming up with the name is not easy. Both of them are on form but we’ll have to make hard decision before we leave,” said Kioko. The tournament was pushed back by two days and will now start on February 27 with the winner representing Africa at the world Championship in Peru in June this year.
The team is expected to depart for Cairo on February 25. The juniors are set to play Kenya Prisons and Kenya Pipeline before they leave. So far they have played a number of build-up matches with local clubs. Centres: Anne Lowen (Kwanthanze), Carolyn Sirengo (Mautuma), Shyren Jepkemboi (Malava)-Left attackers: Melvin Wabwire(Mautuma), Maurine Okiru, Dorine Marani (Lugulu), Lilian Lelei (Kwanthanze)- Right attacker: Maurine Wekesa (Lugulu), Yvonne Wavinya (Kwanthanze)-Setters: Faith Imudia (Lugulu), Veronica Tanui (Mautuma).
