The Y in style
Yunasi Band, undoubtedly one of
the best afro-fusion bands, are loved for their unique East African
music style called Sesube, which is a combination of Sega, Isikuti and
Benga. They take the sounds and inspirations from local communities,
cultural styles and languages and fuse them with a European component.
Kyoumukama Faith got to catch up with Davis Ngalah from the renowned
band to chat about his eclectic style
@FaithKyoumukamaMy style is urban smart casual. My first fashion memory would be the kaunda suits paired with DH from Bata. It gave one that West Coast Ice Cube look that Mark 10 from Westside used to rock.
My style has really changed over the years. Baggy pieces filled my wardrobe but as I grew older, I transitioned to more fitting clothes. My grooming routine doesn’t involve much. As long as I have picked out something to wear, I’m good.
I don’t have a favourite splurge clothing brand. I believe in mixing this and that as long as it’s African print. That aside, I cannot get enough of my Kang inspired printed pants by Dishol. I can rock them with anything. They fit all occasions.
The guy trend I am currently loving is African printed pants, military boots and leather jackets. I once had a wardrobe malfunction when I was on tour in Belgium. My jeans fell off when I was performing on stage but I pulled them back up. Mega red face.
The performance continued like nothing happened. Fashion hits and misses…they haunt you. Talking about fashion no-nos, I believe it’s time gospel artiste Eko Dydda did something about his look. I love his music but his style something’s a miss.
If I could wear one colour for the rest of my life, it would it be blue. I would rock all different shades. The occasion I have the hardest time dressing for is cocktails and formal events. I am not a suit person.
Kwame Bonsu from Kiss TV or Delvin Mudigi from Sauti Sol are my style icons.
My signature scent is Kenzo Homme. It’s one of my must-haves, alongside my sunglasses, a black leather jacket, crisp white tees and leather shoes.
